This seminar is being jointly held on 8 December 2004 by the
British Consulates- General in Guangzhou and Hong Kong, the
Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulate
General in Guangzhou, and the Guangdong Human Resources
Management Association
The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
recognises that a business’s activities have a wide impact
on the society in which it operates, and that managing those
impacts brings enormous benefits for both the business and
also for society. The seminar will show how CSR maximises
sustainable and profitable business. The seminar will
demonstrate how the adoption of good CSR practice has
enormous benefits for ensuring the continued and vigorous
growth of enterprises, and for the development of a stable
and prosperous society.
A range of high level speakers will make presentations at
the seminar, including from the Shenzhen government, from
Chinese civil society, and from renowned UK and Hong Kong
companies operating in China such as B&Q and Li and Fung.

arising as a result of one specific employee volunteering
programme- Race for Mentors. This programme has brought
together the government sector, the private sector and the
non-profit sector over a 6 month programme where corporate
volunteers have mentored youth from a government school.
The business case for all 3 parties has been measured and
the case study proves that if undertaken strategically,
there is a strong business case for employee volunteering.

Shalini is a graduate of the London School of Economics in
UK and holds a CPA from Chicago. She is active in a number
of civil society organizations in Hong Kong concerned with
issues of gender, education and race discrimination. |
