Event: CSR in Europe - Lessons learned for Hong Kong

Details: As part of efforts to promote CSR in Hong Kong , the British Consulate General is funding the visit of Ms. Norma Jarboe, Director, 'Opportunity Now'  - Business in the Community (a UK CSR NGO). Norma specialises in race and gender issues.
The Consulate would like to invite British Chamber members to an informal Q&A session on some of the research and recent issues raised. 
Community Business is a supporting organisation of this event.
A light lunch will be provided.

Event: Diversity and Inclusion in Asia: Women in the Workplace and Cross-Cultural Effectiveness

Event: The Supply Chain Talks Back

Details: Rather than having experts from big companies outline their own CSR policies and programs, our aim is to provide a forum for representatives from the supply chain and other interested parties to speak about CSR and related issues from on the ground. Speakers will include experts on labour law, human rights, migrant workers, factory workers, trade union representatives, academics, women's groups and health experts from across the Asia Pacific. It will be highly practical and the focus will be on tackling the real problems encountered by companies wanting to do CSR in the region.

Event: Asian Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility  
Date: Thursday - Friday, 8 - 9 September 2005
Venue: Hilton Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia
Details: This year's theme is "Exploring CSR Strategies for Business: How the right strategy for CSR can make business more effective."  The conference is to be a two-day affair featuring the integration of a) plenary sessions addressed by keynote speakers, b) special interest sessions that focus on specific dynamics, learnings and best practices of companies, c) an expo/trade show featuring specific company CSR programs, and d) optional field visits to innovative CSR program sites in and around the host city.

Ms Shalini Mahtani is one of the speakers (co-presenter) and the moderator at the Asian Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility (AFCSR) 2005 on the session "Women Leaders in the workplace - their issues and challenges". She will moderate the "Aligning CSR Strategies with top management and Board concerns".
 

Ms Katharine de Vaal  will be a moderator for the special interest session topic, "Managing Impediments to linking CSR with Business Strategies" .

Event: CSR Asia Summer School
Date:

Wednesday - Saturday, 3 - 6 August 2005

Venue:

Hong Kong

Details: This four day workshop is aimed at new CSR managers, auditing staff, researchers, postgraduate students and any others interested in attending. The emphasis is on CSR in the Asia-Pacific region.  It will be a highly practical, workshop based course limited to 20 participants.  There will be 7 half-day workshops, a field trip based on a practical stakeholder engagement and an optional 1-day trip to China.  The overarching approach is to demonstrate how CSR is linked to image and brand enhancement through an examination of reputation risk.  We will examine important concepts such as transparency and accountability and consider how CSR can be implemented in practice.  Workshops will cover Perspectives on CSR in Asia; Business and human rights; Labour standards and trade unions; Tackling child labour; The environment and natural resources; Stakeholder engagement (linked to half-day field trip); and Public health and occupational safety.  After the course participants can participate in a one day trip to Guangdong, Southern China to experience at first hand some of the issues addressed in the course.

Event: American Chamber of Commerce - Business Orientation Program

Details: BOP is a two-week program for university students from Hong Kong, Mainland China , Macau and Taiwan who are interested in developing a better understanding of key international business practices and learning to work together on real-world business issues. The theme for this year is "Corporate Responsibility in China: Opportunities and Risks in Evolving Expectations."  Participants prepared a case study on different aspects of CSR and Shalini Mahtani was one of the judges for the case study competition.

Other members of the business community will be engaged in the planning of this event. By engaging stakeholders, listening to their expectations, and acting on priority issues, the business community can focus resources on taking positive steps to promote the sustainability of Hong Kong.

United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in collaboration with the Royal Thai Government will be organizing the Second Asia-Pacific Business Forum (APBF).   In the APBF 2005, over 500 business executives, senior officials, academics and NGO representatives from the Asia-Pacific region and elsewhere are expected to participate in dialogues on how to improve the Asia-Pacific business environment as well as the role and agenda for CSR in Asia.  

Ms Shalini Mahtani, CEO of Community Business will be the moderator for one of the workshop.

Details: Community Business will conduct 4 identical workshops on EV in March 2005, helping businesses to develop an EV programme that meets business priorities, reflect employees' interests and skills, and address community needs.  At the workshop, participants will learn how to:
  • Engage all levels of staff in volunteering
  • Use EV to benefit the business and its staff
  • Apply a simple Seven-Steps EV framework to maximize the benefits of EV
  • Organise, manage and measure the impact of volunteer projects

Event: Hong Kong Legal Community Tsunami Fundraising Initiative

An action-packed afternoon of games and entertainment is planned with:

Event: Luncheon to launch the publication, 'Women Leaders in Hong Kong: Insights into their workplace experiences'

Women in Hong Kong represent 42% of the workforce yet only 26% of top and senior management positions.  Though apparently higher in number than other places, this percentage of women at the top camouflages the enormous challenges that women leaders face.  In this unique publication about women leaders in Hong Kong, Shalini Mahtani, explores the personal and work lives of women at the top in Hong Kong. 
Through first hand interviews with 22 women leaders, from business, government, politics, sports, the arts and civil society, this publication explores the lives of these women and in particular their:

  • Personal backgrounds and relationships with children and life partners
  • Definition of leadership and perceived differences between female and male leaders
  • Reasons for changing jobs, career plans, job mentors, contacts and personal networks
  • Opportunities and barriers in the workplace
  •  Working hours and work-life balance and family-friendly work initiatives.
