The Canadian
Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong in partnership with the
Department of Management Sciences of City University of Hong
Kong announce the results from the first ever Hong Kong
Sustainable Development Index Survey (HKSDI).

Social Responsibility in Europe and Asia: Critical Elements and
Best Practice' by Professor Richard Welford at the Centre
of Urban Planning and Environmental Management, University of
Hong Kong. March, 2003.
In the first
ever Asia-wide survey of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR),
the Corporate Environmental Governance Programme (CEGP) at the
University of Hong Kong has identified some encouraging elements,
but the overall picture is one of Asian companies lagging behind
their European counterparts.
In Asia itself,
there are differences between countries. For example, in Hong
Kong companies fair better on the internal components of CSR whereas
Singapore fairs better on the external aspects.

Governance as a Competitive Necessity' by Lam, J.C.K. Salahuddin,
S. Tsoi, C.S.J (2003) at the Centre of Urban Planning and Environmental
Management. March, 2003.
This report
finds that Corporate Governance is not yet a necessity for companies
in Hong Kong but is an advantage for companies wishing to optimize
their brand equity. The research interestingly suggests that people
in Hong Kong rate environmental and social indicators amongst
the top 3 factors in making purchases after quality and price.

Role of Companies in the Development of a Vibrant
Third Sector in Hong Kong' by Golin/ Harris Forrest. 2001.
The Central
Policy Unit of the Hong Kong government commissioned this research.
Major findings include:
- Big companies
give more. So do companies with large numbers of staff employed
locally
- Companies
are most willing to give to education, environment, poverty/
disabled/ aged, children and health
- Corporate
giving accounts for about 10% of total giving.

on Attitudes Towards Corporate Volunteering in Hong Kong'
by Research & Survey Programme, Lingnan University. 2001.
The Central Policy Unit of the Hong Kong government
commissioned this research. Major findings include:
- The greatest
hindrance to volunteering for companies is the lack of manpower
- The two
main drivers for corporate volunteering include helping the
needy and finding meaningful activities for staff.
