Why focus on Tin Shui Wai?
Tin Shui Wai is Hong Kong ’s largest new town with a population of well over 270,000 people. There are 3 key challenges to this new town: 1. High unemployment rate: many low skilled labours with no hope of finding job opportunities in Tin Shui Wai. 2. Risks of intergenerational poverty: a young population from less privileged background with one of every 10 families on the CSSA scheme. 3. Lack of self motivation: there are a higher percentage of non-engaged youth who later become unemployable. After a series of suicide cases involving families and children, the media has since named Tin Shui Wai the ‘City of Sadness ’. The CBLT has agreed to focus on Tin Shui Wai in order to meet the many needs of this community.

How did you develop this concept?

The concept was developed as a result of a lengthy consultation process with the business community, namely the Community Business Leadership Team ( CBL T), NGO community in Tin Shui Wai and university sector.  Following a ‘Seeing is Believing Visit’ to Tin Shui Wai in January 2008, the CBLT recognised that for many young people in the district, the prospect of a tertiary education or a job in the heart of corporate Hong Kong is a far off dream.  By partnering with tertiary education institutes and tapping into the unique resources of the corporate sector we hope to bring this one step nearer.

What are you trying to achieve with this programme?

The CBLT recognises that it cannot change the lives of these young people in one day.  However, the hope is that by giving them access to people and experiences they would not otherwise have, this programme might broaden their vision, inspire them to think about their future job opportunities and encourage them to continue their studies.

How did you select the corporate hosts?

Community Business invited member companies who were interested in being Corporate Hosts to complete a nomination form and then selected them according to a number of key criteria.  The focus was on trying to identify companies that would be a recognised brand for these young people and accessible in terms of potential job opportunities.

What is expected of the corporate volunteers?
The role of the corporate volunteers is essentially to work as part of a team and act as a mentor for the day.  You will be expected to interact with the young people in your team, seek to understand their personal aspirations, encourage them to continue their studies and inspire them to think about their future job opportunities.  We are looking for people who have an optimistic outlook and can enthuse these young people to be positive about their future opportunities.
